Why does an artist need a website in the first place?
As we now being an artist, that we like it or not, is not only creating our art. We need to put ourself out there, building trust on our name and creating our network circle.
A website is a great tool you can use to massively improve and simplify the marketing, networking and managing side of being an artist. It is fundamental to keep your contact information, create and show a portfolio with your works, and to even sell your artworks/service without the need of any intermediary.
Having an online website will also make you look very professional and efficient, which is essential if we wish to build trust and reach customers. But, what is exactly needed to reach this “professional look”?
Elements that Make your Portfolio Look Professional and Trustworthy
Contact Info
You don’t want to look impossible to reach for your clients, right?
Including your email address, social media profiles and an address (of your studio for example, if you have one) also helps to look more trustworthy and available. Make it easy for potential clients to reach out to you!
About page
People want to see who’s behind the work. A simple page like this one could create a better connection with your audience and potential clients, as well as emerging from millions of other artists thanks to your unique personality!
You may be interested to include:
- Your background
- Your first experiences
- Your personal interests
- What motivates you
- And more!

Your Services
It is really important to be clear and specific in explaining to your audience what you do. You want to make sure that potential clients understand exactly the services you’re offering, so that they can decide if you’re a good fit for them!
If you’re an illustrator, it’s way. better to specify which field of illustration you’re specialised in. Same goes with labels such as “designer” or “painter”; people need to know more in order to work with you, and being too generic can lead to losing their interest.
Testimonials
Testimonials and recommendations from your clients are KEY! They make your potential clients feel safe about their decision and give trust towards your skills and abilities.
Always ask to your clients to share their thoughts with you at the end of each work; good AND bad reviews are both important to improve and understand your audience’s needs. Always learn from the negative reviews and show the good ones – it’s a win-win!
Appealing Home Page
Your homepage is really important since it will be the first thing people see. It needs to be appealing and clear in order to convince people to go through your website to know more.
Fast and easily understandable information is what people are looking for; if it requires too much attention and brain work from their side, they’ll probably leave soon.
So, what to put in our home page to be catchy?
- Our name and what we do (Ex: Hello everyone! I’m Giada, a blogger and digital illustrator from Italy who loves to portrait people.)
- High-quality images of you and some of your works
Some sample of your works!
Would you buy something without even seeing it? Most likely not.
So don’t be mysterious, and show some of your projects on your website: this is the whole point of an online portfolio after all. Add some other details such as date, technique and a small description and ta-daah! Your online portfolio is set up, ready for you to show and for others to consult.
Now we want to hear from you! What did you put in your website, if you already have one? If not, how are you planning to?
Leave a comment dropping your suggestions to inspire and get inspired by each other!
